Queensland
Champion Aiden Raymont raced to victory in Round two of the G&W
Racing Modified Production Series at Maryborough Speedway, in
what was a fiercely contested main event.
Father
and son duo of Mark and Greg Raymont led the field away for the
thirty lap feature, but a rare event saw Mark Raymont spin in
front of the field, bringing on the yellows. Raymont was
sent to the rear of the field, which moved Todd Doyle into
pole position for a full restart. Hard Charger Matt
Swarbrooke qualified his commodore out of position four, but
after a restart Swarbrooke got turned around which saw a
multi-car pile up. Swarbrooke's car was taken off the
track with an extensive amount of damage.
The
racing got underway for the third time until lap five when
Travis Hutchinson spun to a halt, meanwhile Mark Raymont had
miraculously manoeuvred his way back up to seventh place.
Todd Doyle led the field away from Aiden Raymont, Steve Price
and Greg Raymont.
Aiden
Raymont had the crowd on their feet as he moved past Todd Doyle
for the lead, only to run wide the next turn allowing Doyle back
through. As the track started to go slick, it looked like
the Maryborough circuit was only going to display one racing
line, but Livewire racer Shane Macdonald proved otherwise as he
started making his own line, driving around the outside of
several cars on the high line, moving up to position six after
starting in tenth.
With
five laps to go, Todd Doyle started to struggle with the slick
track and spun in front of Raymont in turn four. Doyle
looked to have the race won but an uncharacteristic mistake saw
him join the que at the back of the field. Aiden Raymont
assumed the lead up front, followed by Steve Price, Mark
Raymont, Steve Downes and Shane Macdonald.
The
sprint race to the end was hotting up, with the top five cars
nose to tail. Shane Macdonald went around Steve Downes for
fourth, as Steve Price and Mark Raymont battled for second, the
two cars come together on the final turn which allowed Macdonald
up the inside to clinch second place across the finish line.
Aiden Raymont made it two starts, two wins for this season at
the Maryborough circuit and couldn't be happier, while Shane
Macdonald showed that some patience and hard driving can pay
off.
Mark
Raymont crossed the line for third with Steve Price fourth,
followed by Lismore resident Steve Downes, who drove cleanly and
superbly all night for a well deserved result.
Royce
Ernst was the biggest mover of the night, after starting from
position eight in the B-main, Ernst moved forward to claim the
win, then backed it up by finishing 6th in the A-main.
Todd
Doyle re-gathered seventh place after his late spin, followed by
Dennis Shallcrosse, Mark Ferguson, Luke Hollyman, Steven Zahl,
Tom Johnson and Gary Maroske.
Heat
race action got underway early in the evening sunshine, and
Steve Downes started the night off with a win in heat 1, whilst
heat 2 saw a brilliant display of clean door to door sedan
action. Luke Hollyman ran away with the heat win as Troy
Ware dice his way through the field to finish second.
Mark
Raymont stormed to victory in heat 3 and Greg Raymont in heat 4.
Heat 5 saw Gavin Lorensen receive a hard fought win ahead of
Aiden Raymont. The second round of heats saw Steve Price
take the win in heat 6 and Matt Swarbrooke in heat 7.
Travelling from Mackay, Ross Wellby stole the show taking out
heat 8, and Todd Doyle winning heat 9. Mark Raymont made a
gutsy move around the outside of Steve Downes and Mark Ferguson
on the final corner to take the win in heat 10.
The
final round of heat wins went to Todd Doyle, Dennis Shallcrosse,
Shane Coutts, Greg Raymont and Shane Macdonald
The
B-main got underway with the top four finishers to make the
transfer to the A-main. Royce Ernst moved his way through
the field to second behind Tom Johnson, while David Jacobi spun
Troy Ware up the back straight at a frightening speed which
resulted in several cars colliding with Ware. Jacobi was
sent to the rear, as the race got underway Royce Ernst moved
around the outside of Tom Johnson to take the lead. Ernst
won the B-main followed by Tom Johnson, Jason Campbell and Gary
Maroske.
