Australian
Champion Todd Doyle claimed victory in Round three of the G&W
Racing Modified Production Series held at Lismore Speedway
(Saturday November 24). Doyle qualified his Tracwell Truck
Bodies sponsored VY Commodore off the front row in pole
position, and lead all thirty-laps of the main event, all the
while increasing his strangle hold on the Series lead.
Steve
Price applied some pressure to Doyle early on in the piece, but
Greg Worling ensured a battle with Price for the majority of the
race, tussling for second place. The two cars dicing with
each other through lapped traffic, keeping the crowd on their
feet. With a few laps to go Worling dropped back to 10th place
after breaking an axle.
Steve
Price was the first runner-up, whilst after a complete diff
replacement in the heats, Aiden Raymont made it out for the
feature race, crossing the line in third, to grab some much needed points to
try and hold onto his second placing in the series so far.
The ever persistent Gary Maroske in his Mazda RX7 claimed a well
deserved fourth place, and Colin Hockley powered home
in his Ford BA Falcon to finish in fifth place after staring
from position ten.
Jason
Campbell had one of his best nights, coming home in sixth spot,
with Toowoomba resident Royce Ernst grabbing 7th place, followed
by Travis Barron, David Jacobi, Greg Worling, Troy
Barnes and Mark Ferguson.
Many
cars fell victim to mechanical problems, forcing early
retirement including Greg Raymont who was running sixth, until
and engine misfire put a hold on his race. Former National
champion Jason Jolley had a night he would rather forget, after
struggling through the heats with losing water, Jolley had a
start at the rear of the field in the feature event, but pulled
onto the infield after a handful of laps once again.
Matt
Swarbrooke was up to 8th place after starting from the rear of
the field, but was forced to retire with an engine misfire.
Heat
race action saw some tough race stewarding, as Gavin Fletcher
made his way into the lead in heat one, but was later black
flagged. Todd Doyle moved into the race lead, but Doyle
was put back to the rear of the field on a restart for a racing
incident. Doyle managed to climb his way back up to second
place behind Aiden Raymont.
Shane Macdonald and
Jason Jolley set the pace in heat two, breaking away from the
rest of the field, as the two cars jostled for the lead lap for
lap. Jolley found a way past Macdonald into the lead, only a
few laps later Jason Jolley's car lost water and pulled to the
infield, handing the lead back to Macdonald. Macdonald went on
to establish a good lead and greeted the chequered in first
place. Greg Worling was second and Gary Maroske third.
Heat
three saw Steve Price cross the line first ahead of Royce Ernst,
while Mark Raymont received a black flag for a pass he made as
he moved into the lead.
Todd
Doyle ran away with heat four ahead of Greg Raymont and Jason
Campbell
Gavin
Fletcher made amends for his non-finish in heat one, recording a
win in the fifth heat followed by Darren McDonald and Mark
Raymont.
In what was a
frightening encounter in heat six, Shane Macdonald raced around
turn one and onto the back straight and suddenly headed straight
for the wall, the car had lost all steering with the wheels
pointed straight ahead. Macdonald slammed into the pit gate
wall, tearing the right hand front corner and suspension off the
car, which saw him out for the night with substantial damage to
the car. With one lap to go the race was declared. Steve
Price was the winner from Gary Maroske and Colin Hockley.
Todd
Doyle made his way into the lead in heat seven, but was once
again put to the rear, the officials deeming some unfair
driving. Doyle moved his way back up to second place ahead
of Travis Barron, but was later relegated back to third after
the race. Greg Raymont recorded the win from Travis Barron
and Todd Doyle.
The
tough stewarding continued as Mark Raymont made his way past
Gary Maroske for the heat win, but was put back to second place
for the pass made. This left Greg Worling for the win with
Raymont second and Gary Maroske third.
Colin
Hockley proved too strong in the final heat, taking the checkers
from Quintin Clarke and Royce Ernst.
Due to
time constraints the B-main had to be cancelled.
