Todd Tools them in Kingaroy
Monday November 27, 2006.  Ryan Harris

After showing plenty of speed at the opening round of the Hydraulic Drilling Service Modified Production Series at BIS last weekend, Todd Doyle has finished round two with an excellent A Main win in front of a very big Kingaroy crowd.

The night started off under the warm afternoon sun, and the 30 + field of Modified Production were all looking forward to turning it on for round two.

The opening heat was a sign of things to come went current Queensland champ, Todd Doyle streaked away from the field to win the opening heat by a big margin.  Steve Thomsen was running with Doyle until a front right tyre went flat.  Gary Maroske smashed the field in the second heat after starting of the front row.  Maroske had no competition from round one feature winner, Shane Langton or Wayne Miles who both pulled to the infield and didn’t take any further part in the night.  Heat three saw Michael Hally take out the win with the only challenge coming from Craig Mellor who unfortunately threw the seal out the front of the motor and also took no further part in the meeting although still running second in the heat race. Aidan and Greg Raymont lined up off the front row of heat four, and that is how they stayed when Aidan kept his father and Toowoomba Robert Trapp closely behind.

After a surprisingly clean first round of heats, heat five took a few restarts after Troy Ware got turned around by Fletcher and at the next restart Ware spun by himself however the drivers did well not to end up on top of each other.  Aidan Raymont finally won the heat from fast finishing Brett Barron.  Heat six saw only 5 cars line up for the start and the race got under way with Greg Worling, Dennis Shallcross and Todd Doyle putting on a fantastic display of driving.  In the closing stages of the race, Doyle got up the inside of Worling and crossed the line in first, however the chief steward, put Doyle back two spots as the pass was deemed illegal which meant Lismore’s Greg Worling was the eventual winner.  The seventh heat started with a bang, as Dale Grother came out of turn one and ended up rolling his Cortina after taking a hit from Darryl Niesler.  Niesler was black flagged for his trouble.  At the restart, Hally, Maroske, Trapp and Travis Barron ran nose to tail swapping position, but it was Robert Trapp who crossed the finishing line to claim the win.  Hally crossed in second, but was also put back two positions after his pass on Maroske was deemed illegal.  The opening laps of heat eight where neat and tidy until Luke Hollyman spun himself in turn one which caused a mass of carnage in front of the bar.  Steve Thomsen was the biggest loser as the incident ripped the front end out of his Falcon and then had the fuel tank moved by a massive hit in the rear from Matthew Swarbrooke who also sustained massive damage.  Shane MacDonald also got a big hit from behind, but he was fortunately able to be restarted.  This left only three competitors for the rest of the heat which saw Steve Price beat home Greg Raymont and Shane MacDonald.

Round three started with a frantic start to heat nine, with plenty speed on up the front.  Greg Raymont had plenty of smoke bellowing from the green falcon but still showed excellent pace.  Steven Zahl lost a wheel in turn four which brought on the yellows, but the action didn’t stop there as Raymont’s G29 Falcon caught on fire.  The Kingaroy crash crew quickly extinguished the flames, but Raymont would take no further part to the heat.  At the restart Lismore’s Steve Downes held all challenges to bank handed championship points.  The tenth heat was very clean and after Todd Doyle blew pass Brian Learoyd, everyone watched Learoyd hold of Travis Barron for second.  The next heat was similar to the last but this time, Bundaberg’s Dennis Shallcross capitalised on his pole position start to win the eleventh heat.  The final heat saw Shane MacDonald say out of harms way and win the final heat.  Although MacDonald ran away with the heat, Aidan Raymont, Dale Grother and Michael Hally put on a fantastic race for the minor placings. Grother finished in second from Hally in third.

Due to having not enough cars left to run the B-Main, the Hydraulic Drilling Services 30 lap A Main lined up with 22 cars.  It was an all Gympie front row with Doyle off one and Aidan Raymont from two.  The final got under way very cleanly as the 22 drivers tussled for positions without incident.  Doyle and Maroske in his Mazda RX7 cleared out, but on lap 19 the yellows where brought on for the first time when Darren Baldwin hit the fence in turn four.  At the restart Doyle and Maroske raced away again, but this time Michael Hally got passed Trapp and set his sights on the front two.  Just as Hally got the front pair and only with two laps to go, the yellows were once again on, after Brett Barron and Steve Downes tangled up. With a two lap sprint to the chequered flag, the big Kingaroy crowd sat on the edge of their seats to see if either Maroske or Hally could get passed the inform Doyle.  The green dropped and Doyle got a cracker of a start and raced home to win Round two from Gary Maroske, Michael Hally, Robert Trapp and Steve Price in fifth.

The drivers have only a two week break before heading to this season's Queensland Title venue, Mothar Mountain Speedway in Gympie.  With keeping this in mind, round three should see a field of over 40 Modified Productions which will be something not to miss on the 9th December.

The Modified Production Entrants group would like to thank Kingaroy for hosting round two of the series and all of the following sponsors for making this seasons championship possible.
