Todd
Doyle raced to victory in his Tracwell sponsored VY Commodore at
Round 4 of the HDS Modified Production Series at the Barter Card
Lismore Speedway. Doyle was under pressure later in the
race from Michael Hally in what was an action packed main event.
As the
cars rolled out in the evening sun for heat one, Brendan Randall
streaked away to win the first heat of the night, and fended off
a late challenge from Greg Worling. Worling come in for
second place and Jason Campbell 3rd. After a front row
start for the next heat, Matty Swarbrooke looked to have a good
package for the night, until he ran a bit too high and fell
victim to the concrete wall. Swarbrooke tearing the
suspension out of his car which saw him park the car on the
trailer for the night. Dale Grother was the big mover,
coming from 8th on the grid to take heat two honours, while
Aiden Raymont clipped the fence and pulled on the infield with a
flat right rear tyre. Steve Downes also put his car in the
fence after another restart, which made for a very sad looking
race car. Downes would now drive the car of Gerry Flood's
for the rest of the night. Mark Ferguson finished in
second and Shane Langton 3rd.
Local
Lismore ace and former National Champion Jason Jolley started
from pole position in heat three. Jolley jumped straight
to the lead, as Todd Doyle moved into second place and was
challenging Jason Jolley for the lead. Both VY Commodores
were neck and neck but Doyle pulled on the infield suddenly as a
spark plug lead had jumped off the engine, leaving it running on
only a few cylinders. Jolley went on to win heat three
with Greg Raymont second, Michael Hally third and Shane
Macdonald fourth. Steve Price's night wad over before it
started after engine troubles after the first heat which saw him
park it on the trailer for the night.
Current
NSW Champion Michael Hally crossed the line in first place for
heat four, but was relegated to third for jumping the start.
Brendan Randall officially finished first and Shane Langton
second. Mark Raymont came through for a win in heat five
ahead of Greg Raymont, Todd Doyle and Troy Ware.
Craig
Mellor drove an unfamiliar car to a heat six win. Mellor
was driving the Travis Barron Falcon as he had other racing
commitments, whilst Mellor awaits his commodore for repairs to
the engine. Mellor would take no further part in the race
meeting after breaking a rocker in the Falcon. Gavin
Fletcher greeted the chequers in second and Jason Jolley third.
Heat
seven was won by Michael Hally, while a fast finishing Todd
Doyle come in for second, Jason Campbell third and Shane Langton
4th.
Series
leader Greg Raymont looked to have heat eight wrapped up, but
smoke poured from the #29 racer which saw the car slow and
drifted back towards the back. Raymont's steering rack had
let go which forced Greg not to compete in the A-main. At
the same time Jason Jolley went underneath both Greg and Mark
Raymont to clinch the lead. Jolley's car was unbelievably
quick as he come from position six on the grid to take the heat
win, followed by Mark Raymont and Gavin Fletcher. Aiden
Raymont did not finish after a flat left front tyre.
The
final heat of the night saw a five car pile up after Neil
Coomber and Darryl Neisler come together and stopped on the
track, which left no room or time for anyone else as they all
tried to avoid it. Brendan Randall was the first casualty,
suffering major front end damage, Brian Learoyd also got caught
up in the action, which saw him finish in fifth but could only
turn the car left. Shane Macdonald was involved as well
but was able to keep going with minor damage to the suspension.
In what was a sprint to the line, Dale Grother and Greg Worling
were the ones to watch, putting on a daring display of driving
as Grother fought hard on the outside of Greg Worling. The
two cars side by side as they crossed the finish line, but
Grother was just ahead, Worling second and Shane Macdonald
finishing 3rd.
Noel
Clarke won the B-main, followed by Steve Downes, Allan Irwin and
Darryl Neisler grabbing the final transfer spot.
As the
22-car field lined up for the A-main, it was Jason Jolley to
start from pole position with Dale Grother out of position two,
followed by Michael Hally, Shane Langton, Greg Worling and Todd
Doyle. The feature race got underway with Jason Jolley
leading the way. Michael Hally moved into second with Todd
Doyle third. After 10 laps there was a stoppage after a
car had stopped on the track. In surprising circumstances
Jolley was relegated back to third as a penalty for a racing
incident, which put Todd Doyle in the lead and Hally in third.
In what was turning out to be a captivating race between the top
three cars, the green flag waved as it was three cars wide on
several occasions. Each driver not backing off.
Jason Jolly was very unlucky to drop out of contention after a
flat left rear tyre saw him pull out of the race. Michael
Hally squeezed all he could out of his XF Falcon, as he made a
sensational move around the outside on Todd Doyle in turn one to
clinch the lead. Unfortunately there was another caution
period, Hally then got sent back to third place for a racing
penalty. Hally not happy at all with the decision, which
moved hard charger Mark Ferguson into second. Dale Grother
was in fourth with the Toowoomba flyer Shane Langton in fifth.

10 laps
were left on the clock, Doyle started to put a buffer over the
competition, as Hally was looking a way past on the inside of
Mark Ferguson. Coming into turn one, Ferguson and Hally
bumped wheels on what was a rough track which sent Ferguson into
the wall. Mark kept it going but as he took off, the
steering broke from the impact, turning his car around in front
of Gavin Fletcher. Fletcher had nowhere to go and the two
collided which sent Ferguson rolling five or six times
down the back straight. In what was a nasty incident,
Ferguson was still able to climb out of the car and ok.
The race was then declared which saw Todd Doyle clean up the
prize pool for Round four of the Series and grab some valuable
championship points. In what would have been a minor
consolation, Mark Ferguson was awarded second place with
Michael Hally third, followed by Shane Langton, Gavin Fletcher, Dale Grother,
Mark Raymont, Aiden Raymont, Shane Macdonald and Gary Maroske.
The
series will now venture up north to Rockhampton Speedway for
round 5 of the HDS Series over the Australia Day long weekend in

history, with over $10,000 prize money up for grabs.
